Blacklist Youth Skillz Prorgam

Blacklist LLC Lounge
Dear parents,

Our school is on yet another revolution! We are rolling out a new age-appropriate class schedule. These classes will help us target each student’s stages of development even more than before! Through scientific research and psychological developments, our new age-specific classes will provide MAXIMUM results in the classroom.

Why do we say that our new age-specific classes can generate maximum results?

An international study was done to understand the growth and development stages of children between the ages of 3 to 14. Children were evaluated on the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional stages. From those results, a comprehensive format for martial arts education was created for 3 & 4-year olds, 5 & 6-year olds, 7 to 9-year olds, and 10 to 14-year olds.

What does this mean for your child?

Our classes are going to target your child’s skills and abilities even more than before! This means that our classes will target the students’ stages of development to the point where each class will not be too challenging or too easy - each class should be just right! Our goal is to have each student leaving class feeling stronger and more confident in every class!

How are we going to make this innovative concept work?

We are going to divide our classes by age according to the groups mentioned above. This means that your child may have a schedule adjustment and curriculum adjustment. Your child will be part of the very first group of students to participate in this highly innovative program! Just think, your child is gaining an edge that no other school in our area can reach.

Over the next few months, expect innovations to take place. Remember, these innovations are being introduced to enhance your child’s growth and development. At any time if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Best Regards,

Blacklist Early SKILLZ for 3 and 4-year olds

Three to four year olds love physical activity and anything involving play. They have a rich imagination and strong desire to be less dependent on their usual caregivers. With that said, a structured program introducing early skill-based training in Martial Arts can prove to be very successful. The problem is many children this age have a hard time with structure in a group environment like what is commonly found in most Martial Arts schools. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that keeps them entertained while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.

Here's an overview for the stages of development of children ages 3 and 4:

  • Physically- they have low tone and poor hand-eye-coordination.
    • Expect them initially to drop their arms when punching and fall when kicking or jumping. Also expect them to have no concept of spatial awareness, therefore they will drop things that are thrown and bump into people and obstacles often.
    • The goal for your program should be to get them to punch without dropping their arms; kick without falling; jump without falling; and catch objects thrown from various directions and distances.

  • Intellectually- they have a limited vocabulary therefore learning is limited to visual and kinesthetic activities.
    • Expect them to initially lose focus when activities are over-complicated. Also expect them to struggle with commands that have more than two instructions.
    • The goal for your program should be to get them to follow verbal commands with no visual demonstration. Also, the goal should be for them to remember rules and commands without being reminded.

  • Emotionally- they have strong preferences and fears therefore they will act out of bounds when their emotions get out of control.
    • Expect them to run off the mat when they have anxiety. Also expect them to shut down when something either scares them or doesn't go their way.
    • The goal for your program should be to help them follow directions and persevere through an activity even if they are initially emotional.

  • Socially- they are very self-centered. Also, due to their limited vocabulary their common form of communication is mainly physical.
    • Expect them to mock each other, such as falling when their classmate falls. Also expect them to hit or bite when they are angry.
    • The goals for your program should be to help them build good social skills such as spatial awareness; not interrupting when others are talking; and taking turns properly.

By understanding the stages of development of 3 and 4-year olds, we were able to select 8 age-appropriate skills that make up the Early SKILLZ Program:
  1. KICKING
  2. PUNCHING
  3. BLOCKING
  4. CRAWLING
  5. HOPPING
  6. ROLLING
  7. RUNNING
  8. CATCHING

Here is an example of what a white belt must demonstrate for each of the 8 skills above in order to earn their next belt:

  1. KICKING - Front kicking in the air, alternating legs. They must be able to execute ten kicks in a row alternating legs in order to pass.
  2. PUNCHING - Straight punching in the air, alternating arms. They must be able to execute ten punches in a row alternating arms in order to pass.
  3. BLOCKING - High blocking in the air, alternating arms. They must be able to execute ten high blocks in a row alternating arms in order to pass.
  4. CRAWLING - Bear crawling across the mat. They must be able to bear crawl up and down the floor without their knees or elbows touching the mat in order to pass.
  5. HOPPING - Hopping down the floor with both feet. They must be able to hop down the mat with both feet together, and without falling, five times in a row in order to pass.
  6. ROLLING - Rolling a ball down the floor. They must be able to roll a ball down the floor while alternating hands, and keeping at least one hand on the ball at all times, in order to pass.
  7. RUNNING - Running down the floor. They must be able to run down the floor as fast as possible without falling in order to pass.
  8. CATCHING - Catching a ball thrown underhand from one step away. They must be able to catch five balls in a row in order to pass.
We incorporate the skills above into exciting drills that are fun to teach and easy to learn.

Blacklist Skillz Youth Programs

Blacklist LLC Lounge

I wanted to take this time to update all the parents and youth students on the improvements we have been working on this year. As some of you may know, I’ve been working a lot with Master Melody Shuman on what is the best way to teach children. Under her advice we divided up the classes into age groups to better teach material geared to your Childs learning abilities and stage of development. On my last trip to KRU Headquarter in New Jersey I was able to receive my Children’s Martial Arts Instructor Certification from Master Melody. It was a great honor; she is by far the top children’s Martial Arts instructor I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

As some of you may have noticed the children now have the opportunity to test for their skill stripe every class. Each color stripe represents a different skill. There are eight basic skills in each age group and nine belts to earn. Once your child earns all eight of his skill stripes, they will then be eligible for their Skillz Evaluation and next belt rank. If your child misses classes, please contact us by Thursday to set up a makeup class! Some of the kids already have belts from the old IBJJF system. We will make these adjustments at their next belt graduation.

As I stated above, our classes are now divided up by age group as follows;

Early SKILLZ for 3 and 4-year olds

Three to four year olds love physical activity and anything involving play. They have a rich imagination and strong desire to be less dependent on their usual caregivers. With that said, a structured program introducing early skill-based training in Martial Arts can prove to be very successful. The problem is many children this age have a hard time with structure in a group environment like what is commonly found in most Martial Arts schools. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that keeps them entertained while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.

Basic SKILLZ for 5 and 6-year olds

Five and six-year olds are the most enthusiastic students. They love creativity and problem solving, which makes them ideal students in the Martial Arts. The problem is they are so progressive in following tasks that some teachers tend to treat them like their older peers. This is a problem because they still do not have the basic skills necessary to keep up with children ages 7 and up. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that adapts to their social and intellectual curiosity while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.

Core SKILLZ for 7 to 9-year olds

Seven to nine-year olds are what most people consider "the golden age." They are proficient in their vocabulary and problem-solving skills, yet they are not at the age where they want complete independence from adults. This makes the teacher-student relationship stronger than ever. The problem is they still lack core skills, and although they are highly intelligent, they struggle to keep up with students ages 10 and up. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that adapts to their adventurous attitude and youthful nature while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.

Extreme SKILLZ for 10 to 14-year olds

Ten to fourteen-year olds are the smartest students in the school. Yes, they are smarter than most adults! They are also physically competent and can excel in most physical challenges that are presented to them. The problem is they are so focused on what is socially acceptable that they have a hard time keeping themselves emotionally driven to the task at hand. The solution is to provide them with their own program that targets their stage of development in a manner that nurtures their social and emotional instability while at the same time building skills that set them up for the next age group.

How to buid SELF-CONFIDENCE in your child

Dear Parents,
This month your child will be studying the character word: SELF-CONFIDENCE. Self-confidence is an important character trait. Those who have self-confidence tend to be more content with life. They bounce back faster from challenges; they are not afraid to take risks and learn new things; they accomplish more because they believe in their abilities; and they stay committed to sports and activities longer because they do not let obstacles get in their way.
Here is a guideline regarding children and self-confidence based on age:
  • With children ages 3 and 4; they are learning about things that make them feel good. Teach them how to believe in themselves by saying positive things about themselves.
  • With children ages 5 and 6; they are learning how to process both positive and negative feelings. Teach them how to overcome negative feelings by focusing on positive feelings.
  • With children ages 7 and 9; they are learning how to identify other people that are confident. Teach them how to look up to and copy confident people.
  • With children ages 10 and up; they are learning how to be self-reliant. Teach them how to set and accomplish personal goals.

It is clear that a child with self-confidence is happier, more creative, resilient and adventurous. Every parent would like to see his or her child grow up to be like that. We play a very important role in giving children a sense of self-worth. This is because children look up to us and they value what we teach them.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to watching our youthful students build the skill of self-confidence!

Sincerely
